The Bahrain Society for Children with Behavioral and Communication Difficulties (BSCBCD) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with behavioral and communication challenges, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and their families. Founded on the principles of advocacy, inclusion, and community engagement, BSCBCD has become a cornerstone in Bahrain’s efforts to create a more inclusive society.
Mission and Purpose
BSCBCD’s mission is to promote lifelong access and opportunities for individuals with behavioral and communication difficulties, enabling them to become fully participating members of their communities. This is achieved through education, advocacy, active public awareness, and the promotion of research. The society strives to provide holistic support to individuals and families, equipping them with the resources and skills necessary to navigate challenges and unlock their potential.
Attained Goals
Over the years, BSCBCD has achieved significant milestones in advancing its mission:
1. Education and Training: The society operates Alia National School, a fully inclusive K-12 school accredited by WASC, and offers vocational qualifications in areas such as business, healthcare, and computing. It also provides training programs in applied behavior analysis (ABA) and shadow teaching, recognized by the Ministry of Social Development.
2. Community Partnerships: BSCBCD has formed meaningful collaborations, such as the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hilton Bahrain for on-the-job training programs. These partnerships empower individuals with practical skills to succeed in the workplace.
3. Awareness and Advocacy: Through public events, workshops, and conferences like the annual Untangle Autism, the society has raised awareness about ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders, promoting inclusive practices across Bahrain and beyond.
4. Innovation and Expansion: The society has spearheaded unique initiatives like ‘Halla by Alia,’ Bahrain’s first coffee shop and bakery run by young adults with autism, fostering independence and economic empowerment.
5. Support Services: The society also operates AlMaali Medical Center, which offers psychiatric and behavioral medicine services, addressing mental health needs comprehensively for individuals of all ages.
Through its unwavering commitment to inclusivity and empowerment, BSCBCD continues to transform lives, breaking barriers, and building bridges of understanding across the community. Its impact extends far beyond Bahrain, as it serves as a model for organizations striving to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals with behavioral and communication difficulties.
